Plan to Give: Charitable Bequests

Research shows that while over 80 percent of individuals give during their lifetimes, only five percent of people who die leave a bequest to charity, a number that has been flat for over 100 years.

The term "charitable bequest" is used to describe anything you give or leave to charity from your estate through a will or a revocable living trust. An "estate" is any property, money or personal belongings that you may have at the time of your death. Most people leave an estate when they die, even though they may not have a great deal of wealth. Even an individual with a small estate can arrange to leave a charitable bequest.

You can arrange to bequeath a gift from your estate in several different ways. You can set aside a specific dollar amount, leave a percentage of your estate, or leave any assets left over after your family has been provided for. Some people use a bequest to give a charity something they own, such as a car, home, art or jewelry. Others leave a paid life insurance policy or other financial investments, such as stocks, bonds or CDs.

Leaving a gift to charity when you pass on leaves a legacy of generosity and caring. So why the lack of donors? Is it the fault of the nonprofit organizations, the financial planners or our reluctance to talk about death?

If you have a will, give to charity! Here's how: Including Charity in Your Will or Trust

Special Needs Registry

Fairfax County has a special needs registry for residents of Fairfax County. The Special Needs Registry allows residents with medical needs and organizations assisting those with social needs an opportunity to provide information to Fairfax County so that agencies can communicate emergency preparedness, response and recovery resources to our vulnerable, at risk and hard-to-reach residents. The information collected will only be shared with Fairfax County agencies and partner agencies and organizations to improve their ability to serve and will not be available to the public.

There are two types of registration: medical needs and social needs.

Fairfax County defines a person with a medical need as one who has a high-risk health condition that is either temporary or chronic who cannot manage for themselves in a shelter or evacuation center and will require assistance in performing the activities of daily living and/or will require care for and the monitoring of a health condition.

People with social needs are considered to be vulnerable, at-risk or hard to reach in the event of an emergency, but are not medically dependent. This group may need specialized communications and/or transportation but do not require additional support. For example the social needs population is comprised of people who are: older adults or young children; economically disadvantaged; reliant on public transportation; isolated by culture or religion; affected by the digital divide; incarcerated; and living in or attending licensed facilities. This group also includes people who have: household pets or service animals; limited English proficiency; and disabilities.

Kiwanis Club Donates to Local Charities

Seven local charities will soon benefit from donations given by the Kiwanis Club of Tysons Corner. Club members chose to hand out over $2,000 to: Ronald McDonald House, Reach Out and Read, Camp Greentop, Our Daily Bread, Fairfax County Public Libraries, Alternative House, and Clemyjontri Park.

Club members were prompted to give to worthy organizations because of their sincere desire to make a difference in the community and a budget surplus. The Kiwanis mission is “Serving the children of the world.” This mission is accomplished through the charities that were chosen by club members.

The Kiwanis Club of Tysons Corner is a group of young professionals who come together in service and fellowship. They are active in providing hands on service in the areas around Tysons Corner.
Meetings are held twice a month, on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 7:30 pm, in Room 229A at George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church.
